This year the focus is on healthy-looking, luminous skin. And it all starts from within.

With the global emphasis on health and wellness, it’s not surprising that beauty trends this year are firmly focussed on skincare. Well, nothing says wellness quite like a healthy, glowing complexion. What’s interesting is that these days it’s less about what you put on your skin and more about strengthening, protecting and repairing it from within.

And this is where collagen supplements come in. “Collagen is an essential part of the structure of the skin. As you age your body produces less of it resulting in fine lines and sagging,” explains Leanne Rohrs, founder of health supplements specialists Be Bright. “Taking collagen on a regular basis helps to replace lost collagen and stimulates the body into producing more. As a result the skin is plumped up and smoothed, minimising lines.”

Creating a buzz in the skincare world is a new supplement – Luminate. “Luminate has all the benefits of our Original Collagen supplement,” says Leanne. “What raises it to the next level is our unique BioActive formula, GlowActive. This contains hyaluronic acid which captures moisture in the skin hydrating the outer layers, giving your skin a more glowing appearance.”

Another key ingredient is Vitamin C, known for its anti-ageing properties. “Vitamin C brightens the complexion, assists in fading pigmentation and promotes the natural production of elastin and collagen so that your skin looks and feels great,” explains Leanne. The third ‘magic’ component is zinc. An antioxidant, zinc protects and repairs the skin while its anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce redness.

Luminate is very easy to take. As it comes in powder form, just dissolve it in a hot drink such as your morning tea or coffee, blend it into a smoothie or sprinkle it over cereal or muesli. “We recommend taking 10 – 20g daily depending on the results you want to achieve,” says Leanne. Bovine sourced, it’s natural and doesn’t contain sugar, sweeteners, carbohydrates, GMOs, flavourings or preservatives, plus it’s Halal certified. “There’s been an amazing response from our customers with many of them commenting on our website that their skin has never looked better,” she adds.

But collagen benefits more than just the skin. It improves the condition of hair, nails and teeth stimulating healthy growth. It strengthens cartilage, muscles, bones and joints, relieving aches and pains. In addition, it boosts your immune system by supporting and repairing the digestive tract so that your body can absorb nutrients and vitamins.

Also making waves in the wellness and anti-ageing worlds is the Açai berry. Hailed as the new superfruit, it’s harvested from the Açai palm found in Brazil and preserved in powder form. Not only does it have twice the number of antioxidants of blueberries, it’s also rich in Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids which promote both heart and brain health. Like Luminate, it’s packed with Vitamin C, as well as Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and E and its beneficial minerals include calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper. It has a high level of anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that help to fight cell-damaging free radicals resulting in improved skin, hair and nails, increased energy and the relief of joint pain. “It tastes a bit like unsweetened dark chocolate,” says Leanne who recommends a teaspoon to a tablespoon a day mixed into water, smoothies, yoghurts or juices for optimum results.
