  1. Tell us about yourself. Have you always been entrepreneurial? What led you to taking the first step and setting up your own business?

I grew up in a house with both parents being entrepreneurs! I don’t know any other way. From a young age, I was taught to think out the box, to take opportunities on with both hands and to not fear failure. My main drive in owning my own businesses is to be flexible enough to be with my children when they need me! To be able to take them to the doctor, or watch their Hockey games etc. without having to feel stuck in a job working for someone else.

  1. How did Broody Booty come about and has it changed your life?

I realised when I was pregnant with my first child that there is a lot of untruths that people believe when it comes to being pregnant and exercise, and that there is not a lot of support for women out there if they feel good and want to be active. The same thing for post-pregnancy, the only advice there is, is coming from your Gynae and it’s very conservative advice. When I was pregnant with my fifth child, I realised that I have to do something about it, and having been pregnant five times and feel like I have mastered the art of staying strong and fit and recovering quickly after pregnancy, I felt a huge responsibility to help other women. I am also a huge fan of feeling sexy and owning your life by loving your body and staying the queen in your house – and part of our app is to motivate all women to get, and stay fit with our “get your sexy back” program.

  1. What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well over the years?

Nothing is easy and nothing happens overnight, it takes years and an abundance of sweat and tears to build a strong brand/business. Patience together with obtaining as much experience is key!

  1. What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why?

I have a few! I am such a Vusi Tembekwayo fan! Of course, because he is proudly South African, but also because I find his approach to business so refreshing. You are never a victim, you alone are responsible for your future! That which you put in, you will get out!

  1. If any, what challenges have you experienced as a woman in your industry?

The biggest challenge is the ones we create for ourselves! The struggle of juggling motherhood with a career and the pressure we put on ourselves to be perfect in both! Oh, and then be a good partner too! I have learnt to relax, focus on the priority that needs me most NOW, and not feel guilty if it’s not always the kids or my husband. It’s ok to prioritize work from time to time to get through some tough times.

  1. What is Number One Business Goal you plan to accomplish over the next year?

I would like to diversify as much as possible. Grow businesses in different industries and make sure not all my eggs are in one basket!

  1. Do you have any new projects coming up (or have you just completed a big project ~ reached a milestone, etc.)? If so, please tell us about it.

Together with my friend Jameson we built the Broody Booty APP in less than 6 months, 100’s of workouts carefully planned and tested across four programs. Shooting most of the moves when we were both pregnant and when I was 4 weeks post-partum! I am SO proud of us!!!

  1. What one piece of advice would you give any aspiring female business leaders reading this?

Just start. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Keep your start-up costs as low as humanly possible and leave the fancy stuff for later when the business can fund that! Keeping debt low as a start-up is key!

Broody Booty is an online exercise programme specifically designed for pregnant women, from the time you find out you’re expecting to after you’ve had your baby! It’s a programme designed by two moms – Jameson and Heike. Heike is a mom of 5 and understands the benefits of keeping and staying fit during pregnancy, and afterwards as part of your recovery process. Jameson is an incredible personal trainer and has worked closely with Heike (while 30+ weeks pregnant and 4 weeks after giving birth) to create these workouts!

“Coaching and changing the lives of those who walk into any gym is more than a physical transformation.   It is about the confidence that comes with knowing what your body can do. This message never held as much weight for me as it did when I found out I was pregnant with my first child. All of the years of coaching and hours of studying, finally paid off and I realised exactly where this expertise should and could be used, and to help as many women as possible feel empowered by what training is doing for them pre and post-pregnancy.” adds Jameson.

Together with being a mom, I also own a few businesses and prioritise my relationship with my husband – so I understand the limitations when it comes to time! One of my strong points is the ability to juggle a million things and manage time efficiently. Our programme is designed to keep things short and effective so you can do more with the rest of your day. I’m passionate about a holistic lifestyle, which starts with YOU. I have found that moms become the martyrs in their homes, trying to keep everyone else happy and in the process forget that they are the foundation of a home full of love, nurturing, compassion and understanding! Without feeling healthy (spiritually and physically) you cannot take up this role easily! Broody Booty is about a community of non-judgemental women, who want to see each other thrive and achieve. It’s a safe space where we support each other unconditionally.” says Heike.

Broody Booty is a subscription-based app which you can download for daily workouts at home. All you need is a set of dumbbells, a yoga mat, a power band and water to keep hydrated. It’s safe for your body, incredible for your mind and will make delivery and recovery that much easier.

The subscription service is R150 per month and you can sign up directly online at www.broodybooty.com.
