Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week 2024: Top Picks for Nursing Mothers

As World Breastfeeding Week approaches, from August 1st to 7th, 2024, we are reminded of the profound impact breastfeeding has on the health and well-being of both babies and mothers. This year’s theme, “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All,” emphasises the importance of providing comprehensive support to breastfeeding mothers worldwide, ensuring they have the resources and encouragement needed to breastfeed anytime, anywhere.

Breastfeeding is more than just a means of nourishment; it is a crucial component of maternal and infant health. Studies have shown that breastfeeding reduces the risk of infections, improves cognitive development in infants, and lowers the risk of chronic diseases for mothers. Despite these benefits, many women face challenges and lack the support they need to successfully breastfeed.

To celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, we have compiled a list of top picks to help new mothers on their breastfeeding journey:

  1. Comfortable Clothing: New mothers are in recovery, and their babies are adapting to life outside the womb. Wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement and access for the baby to nurse, is essential. The last thing new moms need is restrictive clothing adding to the challenges of early motherhood.
  2. Carmién Nursing Tea: Carmién Nursing offers a special blend of rooibos, fenugreek, fennel, and aniseed designed to stimulate and increase lactation. This soothing tea, with its vanilla and aniseed flavor, is best enjoyed 4-6 times daily for optimal results. Note: It is advised not to consume this tea during pregnancy. “As a mom of two, I understand the struggles and triumphs that comes with breastfeeding. Combining that with having a newborn baby and being a first-time mom (in some cases) can be incredibly hard. We are so proud of our Nursing tea and all the incredible feedback we receive from moms of how much it helps their lactation and providing healthy hydration. It’s an honour and privilege to be allowed into their little newborn bubble. We don’t take it for granted at all!” says, Lize du Preez néé Mouton, Carmién Tea.
  3. Expert Advice: Access to a lactation consultant can be a game-changer for struggling mothers. Breastfeeding may not come naturally to everyone, and seeking expert guidance can make a significant difference. Consult your GP for recommendations and resources.
  4. Engaging Books/Podcasts: Breastfeeding sessions can be lengthy and repetitive. To make the most of this time, we recommend enjoying a good book or podcast. This not only helps pass the time but also provides mental stimulation and relaxation.
  5. Healthy Snacks: Nourishing your body is crucial during breastfeeding. Snacks like almonds, peanut butter, and avocado on toast are excellent options that promote lactation and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Remember, your body is working hard to support your baby, so it needs adequate nutrition.

World Breastfeeding Week is a time to acknowledge the challenges faced by breastfeeding mothers and to promote, protect, and support their rights. By closing the gap and ensuring all mothers have access to the necessary support, we can improve the health and well-being of future generations.
