The topic nobody talks about and how CBD may help

Menopause is a natural stage of life for women, yet despite the commonality of this natural experience, there remains a sense of unspoken shame around the topic. To encourage dialogue around menopause and offer support to women through this stage, Laager and partner dietitian Mbali Mapholi are opening the discussion around CBD and its potential benefits for women going through menopause this Women’s Month.

“As with menstruation, menopause is another female experience that is often not spoken about candidly in the public space,” explained Candice Sessions, Laager Marketing & Brand Strategy Manager. “This Women’s Month, we want to shift the stigma by opening up the discussion around menopause, its impact, and how natural products like CBD-infused Rooibos tea may assist with symptomatic treatment.”

Renowned local dietitian, Mbali Mapholi, explained that menopause is a natural yet often challenging phase in a woman’s life, bringing a host of symptoms that can affect daily living.

“As a dietitian, I strive to explore natural solutions to alleviate hormonal shifts in the body and promote well-being. Recently, Laager introduced their new Rooibos range infused with CBD oil, and this then prompted a closer look at how CBD may support women through some of their menopausal symptoms. I want to offer women practical tips on how integrating natural products like CBD teas can help to relieve some of the common symptoms of menopause.”

Menopause explained
Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, signifying the end of a woman’s reproductive years. The hormonal shifts, particularly the decline in oestrogen, can lead to various symptoms, including:

  Hot flashes and night sweats

   Insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns

   Mood swings and irritability

   Anxiety and depression

   Joint pain and stiffness

“Managing these symptoms often requires a comprehensive approach, combining lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and sometimes medical treatments. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and effective stress management are crucial elements in easing into this transition,” explained Mapholi.

CBD and menopause: potential benefits
Evidence of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant, is growing.  It is known that there are many cannabidiol receptors in the body.  This is called the endocannabinoid system (a collection of cell receptors), in the brain, other organs, and tissues throughout the body. In theory, this means that by influencing the function of the endocannabinoid receptors, CBD may help alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause.

CBD is known to improve anxiety, mood, and sleep which may have a positive effect on the following menopausal symptoms:

•  Hot flashes and night sweats: Although direct research on CBD’s effect on hot flashes is limited, improvement of anxiety may offer relief.

•  Sleep disturbances: CBD’s sleep-promoting properties can be particularly beneficial for women experiencing sleep disturbances.

•    Mood swings and anxiety: CBD may help stabilise mood and reduce anxiety by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system.

•   Joint pain and stiffness: The antioxidants and general benefits of CBD and Rooibos may assist.

“Laager’s new CBD-infused Rooibos range offers a natural and enjoyable way to incorporate CBD into your daily routine,” continues Mapholi. “This innovative product combines the soothing properties of Rooibos with the potential benefits of CBD, providing a holistic approach to possibly assist with the managing of menopausal symptoms.”

Mbali’s tips for integrating CBD into your diet

1.  Be informed: Ensure that you follow the instructions in the package insert carefully as this is a medicinal product.

2.  Consistency: Regular consumption (1 cup per day) may yield better results so try to incorporate the tea into your daily routine, perhaps as a morning or evening ritual.

3.  Balanced diet: Ensure your diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to support overall health during menopause.

4.  Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

5. Monitor: Keep a journal to track your symptoms and any changes you notice after incorporating Laager CBD Rooibos into your routine. This can help you and your healthcare provider adjust your regimen as needed.

6.  Consultation: Before starting any new supplement, including CBD, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider, especially if you’re taking other medications.

“CBD may offer a natural remedy for managing menopause symptoms, with some of its potential benefits being relief from anxiety and sleep disturbances. Laager’s new CBD-infused Rooibos provides a convenient and enjoyable way to incorporate CBD into your daily routine. By integrating practical tips and maintaining a holistic approach, including a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, you can navigate menopause with greater ease and comfort. The potential of CBD in this context is a promising area of research, and ongoing studies will continue to shed light on its efficacy,” concludes Mapholi.
