The 2024 K-Way MaxiRace Cape Winelands proved to be a showcase of female strength and determination, with incredible performances by the leading ladies on the trails. Leading the charge was Lodelia Kombrink, who secured victory in the women’s 75km race just five months after giving birth to her daughter, Klara. Kombrink, who won the 120km K-Way MaxiRace two years ago, made a triumphant return to the race, dominating this year’s 75km ultra.
Reflecting on her performance, Kombrink said, “What a race! Going up Mont Rochelle was amazing—easier than I remembered—but Assegaaiboskloof really got me this year. Overall, I loved it.” Kombrink’s remarkable feat, coming so soon after welcoming her daughter, earned her the title of ‘queen of the race.’
In the men’s 75km race, Skye Clark took the overall title, marking his comeback after a recent injury. Clark and second-place finisher Michael Wittenberg battled throughout the race, trading positions in the misty and challenging conditions. “The race was unbelievable. The route up to Berg River Neck was super technical, but I just kept taking a moment to look back at the incredible views,” said Clark.
John April from Oudtshoorn, who recently won The Puffer Ultra, clinched the title in the 45km race. After a strong and calculated start, April described the course as a perfect mix of runnable and technical terrain. “The route was nice and runnable, a bit technical at times and hilly, but it was great! I stayed focused and took my chance early, which paid off,” said April. The 45km ladies race was won by Natalie van Reenen.
In the 30km race, trail-running favourite Underson Ncube showed his class, securing the win in a thrilling finish. On the women’s side, Landie Greyling, a legend in the sport, led the pack, relishing the fast-paced route. “It was such a privilege to be able to run MaxiRace this year. The route was super-fast and much shorter than my usual runs; it was honestly such an incredible experience,” Greyling shared.
Meanwhile, up-and-coming trail runner Marie-Tinka Olivier made her mark by winning the women’s 20km race, further underscoring the dominance of the ladies at this year’s event.
Race Director Andri Stander reflected on the success of the day, saying, “While still cold, the weather played along much better for us this year than last year, making for great running conditions. The spectators and supporters were amazing, standing out in the chilly, wet conditions to cheer on their people.”
